Everyone's responsibility: logistical protocols in the face of the pandemic

The coronavirus has changed the world we live in. We have been forced to adapt to a series of measures that are alien to our daily lives. Masks, disinfectant gel dispensers or marks on the floor to remind us of the distance we must keep, among other measures, are already part of our "excursions" through the streets and places we used to visit.

And despite the increase in teleworking, many people must remain in their workplace. Not everyone can work from home, such as medical or service staff.

Workers in the supply chain, transport, storage and production rhythm also continue to do their duty from their posts. Someone must be in charge of maintaining the link and the exchange.

Logistical protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic

Today more than ever it is necessary to understand that all stages of the supply chain are crucial. The idea is to understand how the whole chain works and to address its weaknesses.

For example, this pandemic has increased the importance of including new forms of automation for the supply chain through appropriate technologies.

Although the digitalization of logistic processes is increasing, the basis remains teamwork, now coordinated to guarantee the health of each of its members.

There are several measures to take into account for this contingency that we are facing:

- If in the old normality it was already recommended that people should not share their personal belongings, in the corporate scenario it is important that the new screening and sanitation processes are intensified .

- It is necessary to pay attention not only to the machines and supplies, but also to the employees. First and foremost, it is necessary to know whether they are not sick or have some of the symptoms of COVID-19, so as to ensure that they are isolated and treated as quickly as possible.

- Workers can also serve as an information network. Getting information locally, through people, can be a way to get a clearer picture of what is happening and a complement to official figures. Therefore, communication between employees should be private at this time.

- Ensuring a production line with as little contact as possible is another good idea. Keeping the distance between people, washing your hands with soap and water routinely and avoiding touching your nose, eyes and mouth are the basic measures for everyone working in the logistics process. It is up to each employee to avoid contagion at work. Supervision is key.

- Whenever possible, it is recommended that face-to-face meetings are not held. These can be replaced by video conferences or telephone calls. It does not matter if the employees are in the same distribution center or even a few meters away.

- When video conferencing is not a viable option, the number of participants can be limited to what is strictly necessary and, if possible, the meeting should be held outdoors.

- In the office, employees must maintain at least two meters of distance between seats and ensure good ventilation of the place, with doors and windows open.

- It is important to keep employees informed and to coordinate the work plan based on information on outbreaks and on how the pandemic situation is evolving.

Above all, since the supply chain must not be broken because it would have serious consequences, risk situations must be avoided. Health is everyone's responsibility and must remain the main objective.
